Dr. Stanton and his team were amazing. What I appreciated most was their honesty—it was difficult to pinpoint the exact cause, and they laid out all my options (medication, blood work, or X-rays) without any pressure. I never felt pushed to spend a ton of money, and they acknowledged it could be something as simple as a hairball. I ultimately opted for the X-ray for peace of mind, and I’m so glad I did.
The follow-up was thorough; they explained that if the gagging continues, we have a clear plan for symptomatic treatment or further diagnostics like a Trans Tracheal Wash. The front desk staff was also incredibly cheerful, communicative, and informative throughout the process. Blueberry is happy and doing much better now! Highly recommend this team for their transparency and care.
Updated review 11/11/2025 Our dog had to return to Dr.Stanton's clinic today for a variety of symptoms that probably arose out of a family dinner where our dog with Addison most likely enjoyed too much good food not recommended for him and got sick. We do not have pet insurance so the cost of vet visits involving lab work and prescriptions can become overwhelming. This review centers not only on the care Dr. Stanton gave our dog but the effort of his clinic to try to give us the fairest price for treatment.
In addition, Dr. Stanton took time to write two different responses, the first after receiving Obi's labs and the second, after I wrote to him in response to the lab work. We have had Obi for 8 years and I have never had a vet write a long response. Finally, unlike most veterinary practices, Dr.Stanton works alone and you always see him when you come in for a visit and therefore after only a few visits, both the staff and Dr.Stanton, know our dog well and are aware of his struggles with Addison's disease. It is rare to find a decent practitioner of any discipline but Dr.Stanton and his staff have earned our respect and gratitude for the care they have given Obi.

We continue to get good care with Dr. Stanton and staff. I believe there are two reason why. Most veterinary practices have multiple doctors and our experience in the past is that few have any sense of our dog's medical history because a new doctor is generally seeing him for the first time. We have been with Dr. Stanton for 4 months since our dog was diagnosed with Addison but he and his staff already know Obi well. The second reason is that Dr. Stanton has a wide range of experience with animals of all sizes and species and in talking with other pet owners in the waiting area, he is not only kind but skilled in handling emergency situations with even rarer animals like iguanas, etc. There are many different vet services in San Mateo so it is difficult to know which one to try, but we have found a vet in Dr. Stanton who is kind, knowledgeable and who tries to be fair in his billing for a family that did not have vet insurance for a previously healthy labradoodle and cannot get it now with a diagnosis of Addison’s disease.

Dr. Angelo N. Stanton, Jr., is an independent veterinarian with more than 28 years of experience. Ever since getting the chance to peer through a veterinarian’s microscope as a child, he’s been fascinated by the world of veterinary medicine. He lives outside of San Carlos where he wakes up every morning to deer, turkeys, and the occasional coyote.

The frequency of vaccinations can also depend on several factors such as the dog’s age, medical history, lifestyle, and habits. Puppies typically receive a series of vaccines starting at 6-8 weeks of age and continuing every 2-4 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks old. Adult dogs might receive certain vaccines annually, while others might be given every 3 years or longer. Always consult with a veterinarian about the best vaccination schedule for your specific dog, as they can provide the most personalized and accurate advice.

- Grooming: To maintain a safe, comfortable environment, we require all pets to be current on their rabies vaccinations and to wait at least 48 hours after any vaccinations before checking in. Proof of rabies vaccination in the form of paperwork is required. The waiting period helps to ensure your pet isn’t sore at the injection site, which can cause irritability or lethargy. This waiting period also is to prevent stressing a pet who may be experiencing an unexpected allergic reaction from a vaccine/vaccination. Puppies and kittens between 8 weeks and 4 months of age (3 months in Indiana) may receive services in the salon without vaccinations. In New York City, 6-month Bordetella and DHPP with Adenovirus are also required. In Iowa, DPP with Adenovirus is required. In Connecticut, proof of town license is required. Please note: All pets must be in good health prior to receiving any grooming services.
- PetsHotel & Doggie Day Camp: Vaccinations must be administered at least 48 hours prior to arrival under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian. However, we prefer vaccinations be administered 10-14 days before check-in to ensure maximum efficiency. Written proof is required. You must also show proof of your pet meeting state and local pet boarding vaccination requirements. Please check with your local PetSmart to verify/confirm your local requirements. For cat PetsHotel guests to stay, we also require FVRCP.
- DPP with Adenovirus (Distemper, Parvovirus & Parainfluenza) 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required
- Bordetella Required every 6 months (or as required under the applicable law of your jurisdiction or residence) and at least 48 hours prior to check-in to ensure maximum efficiency and protection against Kennel Cough. Please note that many veterinarians administer this vaccine only by request.
- FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus & Panleukopenia) (for cats) 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required
- Rabies 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required
- Canine Influenza (for dogs) Not required, but highly recommended to help protect against the Canine Influenza respiratory illness. Consult your veterinarian.
- Leptospirosis Not required, but highly recommended to help protect against the Leptospirosis infection. Consult your veterinarian.
Fleas & Ticks In addition to vaccinations, all pets should be flea and tick free. Overnight and Day Camp guests with signs of fleas and/or ticks will not be permitted to check-in at PetsHotel.
