Meet your Veterinarian

Dr. Diarra D. Blue was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and gained a passion for animals during his early adolescence by becoming the neighborhood veterinarian for household pets. He earned a Bachelor of Animal Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University. He later partnered with Drs. Michael Lavigne and Aubrey Ross, Jr., to open Cy-Fair Animal Hospital, which ultimately gave way for the hit Animal Planet reality series, “The Vet Life”.

Dr. Blue can be found speaking at various universities and organizations, serving as chair of the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, or expanding the newly developed Diarra Blue Education Initiative (DBEI), a 501c3 nonprofit helping young people interested in becoming veterinarians through scholarships, mentoring, and training. He enjoys cooking, a gut-wrenching laugh with family and friends, and hugging on his wife, Dr. Jessica Blue, sons Dean and Dylan, and baby girl Nia.

Meet your Veterinarian

Dr. Aubrey J. Ross II was born in Houston, Texas, where he developed a love for animals at a young age. He was 5 when he told his parents that he wanted to become a veterinarian. Following graduation from Tuskegee University in 2007, Dr. Ross accepted a job in Las Vegas, Nevada, at Pebble-Maryland Animal Hospital as an associate veterinarian for three years. Subsequently, he studied exotic and avian medicine at Park Animal Hospital. He also worked for Lied Animal Shelter before moving back to Houston in 2013 to join Dr. Blue in opening Cy-Fair Animal Hospital.

Dr. Ross’s interests include surgery, dermatology, emergency care, shelter medicine, and exotic care. He also has a passion for teaching and helping clients become more knowledgeable about veterinary medicine. Outside of work, he enjoys attending church, spending time with family and friends, running, reading, hiking, golf, basketball, music, movies and traveling.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, PetSmart Veterinary Services hospitals are located inside select PetSmart stores. These clinics provide comprehensive care for pets ranging from wellness checks to vaccines and select hospitals offer urgent care treatment including infections, coughing, or vomiting. Contact your local PetSmart to confirm the availability of specific services.

PetSmart Veterinary Services hospitals provide a variety of vaccines for both dogs and cats, including vaccines for rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and more. However, services may vary by location, so it’s best to contact your local PetSmart to confirm their current offerings. Please note some PetSmart Veterinary Services urgent care locations don’t offer vaccinations.

In general, dog vaccines can be divided into two categories: core vaccines and non-core vaccines.

Core vaccines are those that every dog should receive, regardless of lifestyle or location. These include:

  • Rabies: Required by law in most areas due to its potential to infect humans.
  • Distemper: Protects against a highly contagious and often deadly disease.
  • Parvovirus: Protects against a very serious, highly contagious viral illness.
  • Adenovirus (Hepatitis): Protects against a virus that causes liver disease.

Non-core vaccines are administered depending on the dog’s exposure risk. These may include vaccines for diseases such as:

  • Bordetella Bronchiseptica (kennel cough)
  • Borrelia Burgdorferi (Lyme disease)
  • Leptospira bacteria (Leptospirosis)
  • Canine influenza (Dog Flu)
  • Parainfluenza
  • Canine Coronavirus

The frequency of vaccinations can also depend on several factors such as the dog’s age, medical history, lifestyle, and habits. Puppies typically receive a series of vaccines starting at 6-8 weeks of age and continuing every 2-4 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks old. Adult dogs might receive certain vaccines annually, while others might be given every 3 years or longer. Always consult with a veterinarian about the best vaccination schedule for your specific dog, as they can provide the most personalized and accurate advice.

For additional details about dog vaccine schedules, please review our Puppy Vaccine Guide or this puppy vaccine short from Dr. Hodges, DVM, of PetSmart Veterinary Services.

  • Grooming: To maintain a safe, comfortable environment, we require all pets to be current on their rabies vaccinations and to wait at least 48 hours after any vaccinations before checking in. Proof of rabies vaccination in the form of paperwork is required. The waiting period helps to ensure your pet isn’t sore at the injection site, which can cause irritability or lethargy. This waiting period also is to prevent stressing a pet who may be experiencing an unexpected allergic reaction from a vaccine/vaccination. Puppies and kittens between 8 weeks and 4 months of age (3 months in Indiana) may receive services in the salon without vaccinations. In New York City, 6-month Bordetella and DHPP with Adenovirus are also required. In Iowa, DPP with Adenovirus is required. In Connecticut, proof of town license is required. Please note: All pets must be in good health prior to receiving any grooming services.
  • PetsHotel & Doggie Day Camp: Vaccinations must be administered at least 48 hours prior to arrival under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian. However, we prefer vaccinations be administered 10-14 days before check-in to ensure maximum efficiency. Written proof is required. You must also show proof of your pet meeting state and local pet boarding vaccination requirements. Please check with your local PetSmart to verify/confirm your local requirements. For cat PetsHotel guests to stay, we also require FVRCP.
    • DPP with Adenovirus (Distemper, Parvovirus & Parainfluenza) 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required
    • Bordetella Required every 6 months (or as required under the applicable law of your jurisdiction or residence) and at least 48 hours prior to check-in to ensure maximum efficiency and protection against Kennel Cough. Please note that many veterinarians administer this vaccine only by request.
    • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus & Panleukopenia) (for cats) 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required
    • Rabies 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required
    • Canine Influenza (for dogs) Not required, but highly recommended to help protect against the Canine Influenza respiratory illness. Consult your veterinarian.
    • Leptospirosis Not required, but highly recommended to help protect against the Leptospirosis infection. Consult your veterinarian.

Fleas & Ticks In addition to vaccinations, all pets should be flea and tick free. Overnight and Day Camp guests with signs of fleas and/or ticks will not be permitted to check-in at PetsHotel.
